Surveys show that Americans increasingly dislike and distrust those with different political beliefs. We've sorted ourselves geographically, and even within diverse communities we've sorted ourselves socially so we have few opportunities to interact with different opinions and ideas. With the election just days away, it's an important moment to consider what role civility might play in bringing people back together. But this also requires a deeper vision of civility that goes beyond surface-level politeness. Ultimately, civility is a skill and a tool to help us solve complex problems, and continue to build a stronger, more just democracy.

Kate Ullman is a former high school government teacher, teacher educator, and lifelong public education champion. She now works with teachers to help them incorporate the skills and practices of civil discourse as the backbone for teaching about government and current policy issues. She is the founder and Executive Director of the Legislative Semester, and the Wisconsin Civic Learning Coalition.
